Stoneridge E-Waste Days May 10 & 11

Finally, a convenient opportunity to responsibly dispose
of all the e-waste lying around your house!

E-Waste Recycing Days

May 10th and 11th  

8:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

For the second year in a row, bring your "techno-trash" to Stoneridge and leave it with us for proper disposal at our parking lot collection station! This is a fundraiser--last year many families participated, we raised $2,000 for the school, and we all felt good about helping the environment.

E-Waste Recycling Days give an opportunity to see that your techno-trash is recycled in a way that doesn't hurt people or nature. Pay $1/pound for most of your recyclables.

Curcuit Boards

Televisions, VCRs, DVD and CD players

Computers, printers and fax machines

Copy machines

Cords, extension cords and surge protectors

Dehumidifiers

Docking stations

Game cartridges and video games

Hard drives and keyboards

Microwaves

Modems, monitors, projectors, and routers

Satellite dishes, stereo systems, and telephones 

Electronic material that goes into landfills pollutes the land and water if it is buried and pollutes the air if it is incinerated or improperly recycled (sometimes the same thing). Most electronic-waste-collection services simply export electronics at greatest profit, which usually means the e-waste is processed in a way that's not considered acceptable.

This year, Stoneridge is working with Metech Recycling, an E-Stewards-certified recycler.

E-Stewards certification means that the company’s practices for processing and recycling electronic materials are verified by outside auditors to meet the highest environmental standards.

Metech also destroys all personal data on equipment that it collects, so you don't have to worry about your personal information falling into the wrong hands.

So start gathering those old keyboards, stereo receivers, laptops, and monitors! Bring them to the school for feel-good recycling while supporting Stoneridge! Contact Duncan Cox or Sarah Parker with any questions.  

"Get to Know You" Cocktail Party

It's an evening of socializing with old and new friends!

Join us on Saturday, May 19, at 7:00 p.m., for an evening of great conversation, delicious hors d'oeuvres, festive music, and good fun! Parents of Stoneridge and Harborlight are invited to a "get to know you" cocktail party at Beverly Golf & Tennis Club. The cost is $25 per person. Save the date! More information to follow.

Alcohol, Drug Use, and the Adolescent Brain

Dr. Marisa Silveri, nationally acclaimed Behavioral Neuroscientist, will talk about her research on adolescent brain development and the effects of alcohol and drug use on brain function. This presentation is open to the public at no charge.

Toddlers are venturing into the music room on Wednesdays starting this month, and Children's House students are preparing for their Spring Teas on May 16, 17, and 18.

Babysitting Certification

Does your child enjoy babysitting? Now is the time to take advantage of a Red Cross Babysitting Certification on May 12 or 19th. Increasingly parents require that babysitters have the necessary tools to manage emergencies skill and maturity. This course will help your child gain confidence and provide comfort to parents. This training session will be led by Stoneridge parent, Missy Magnant, and runs from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the Stoneridge campus.

Annual Fund Update

Dear Fellow Stoneridge Parents,

To paraphrase my college fundraising letter;

 “The Annual Fund. Simply participate. At Stoneridge, our small size is an advantage.  Opportunities are more abundant and learning is more personal.  But our size can also be a challenge.  Simply put, our community doesn’t succeed unless everyone pitches in.  Giving to the Annual Fund keeps Stoneridge strong, and strength in numbers is something we can all support.” 

The 40 current Stoneridge families and others listed below have given $79,765 towards this year’s Annual Fund goal of $130,000.  We need the remaining 58 current Stoneridge families to contribute towards the $50,235 we have left to raise in this last quarter of the school year. 

$5 or $5,000, $15 or $1,500, $25 or $2,500, $50 or $500, $100 or $1,000, $1 or $10,000, if you haven’t already given, please participate and make your gift to our children’s school’s Annual Fund now.

Connect the Climate-Change Dots

On May 5, 2012, volunteers around the world will raise awareness of the relationship between the recent extreme weather and the changing climate as part of Climate Impacts Day.

With a goal of keeping climate change on the media's radar, Climate Impacts Day events are being organized by Bill McKibben's 350.org. There will surely be one nearby and Sustainable Stoneridge encourages concerned parents to check 350.org's website for details and consider participating with friends and family.

 

 

BOKS ROCKS!

BOKS, Building Our Kids’ Success, is a before-school physical activity program that sparks a child’s mind and body for better learning during the school day. The program is filled with team-oriented games (relay races and obstacle courses), running, a skill-of-the-week, and nutrition information. 

We are excited to announce that Stoneridge is offering a seven-week parent-run spring session on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 7:30–8:15 a.m. The session begins on April 23 running through June 6 and will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room or outside as the weather warms up. 

Parent volunteers Gretchen Putnam, Sarah Parker, Tracy Chait, and Betsy Shields are gearing up to run, jump, and play their way through the early mornings with your child.

The cost is $25 per child and any child in Kindergarten through 4th grade is welcome to participate. Space is limited to a maximum of 20 children. Registration forms are available on on the BOKS Bulletin Board in the lobby, or contact Gretchen by phone at 978-335-3458 or via email at kivaspirit.moon@gmail.com.

April Vacation Remedy: Spring Camp!

April vacation is just around the corner. If you're trying to figure out how to make that week interesting for your child/ren and easy for you, consider Spring Camp at Stoneridge!

Led by our own wonderful Director of After Care, Ellen Sears, with the help of equally wonderful Toddler House teacher, Paulette Dettorre, your child will enjoy four days of fun, friends, and exercise.

The cost is $150 per child for four full days (Tues. 4/17-Fri. 4/20). Camp starts daily at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m. Children from CH through LE are welcome.

Space is limited, so please respond to Rebecca McGrail by Tuesday, April 3 if you're interested. More details will follow for those who sign up.

 

More Than Coffee at the April 4 Coffee House!

If you haven't attended a Stoneridge Coffee House, now's the time! There's no event quite like it--you'll get to see performers of all ages share their talents in a relaxed, festive atmosphere. Join us in the multi-purpose room from 5:00-6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4. (Students K-MS, please arrive at 4:45 for a warm-up.)

If you'd like to perform, be sure to e-mail Hannah at hmell@stoneridgecms.org with the title and length of your piece. Coffee House ends right at 6:30 p.m. so there will be a cut-off once we have enough acts. 

Pizza, snacks, and drinks will be available for a low cost; all proceeds benefit the music program. Donations of nut-free treats are much appreciated! If you'd like to help out, get in touch with Hannah.

"Free" Car Wash Coming!

 

Let us help you clean off the grit and grime of winter. The Middle School will host a a "free" car wash as soon as the weather warms. We'll transform your most winter-worn car with care. There is no charge, but we welcome donations to help support our upcoming trip to Spain. Stay tuned for an announcement of the date!

 

Annual Fund Update

Thirty-seven current families (the updated list is below), as well as grandparents, alumni and their parents, current and former staff and friends, have pledged $71,265 towards the 2012 Stoneridge Annual Fund goal of $130,000.  Six months of the school year have gone by; we have four remaining and $58,735 to go.

We hope that every single Stoneridge family will participate in the Annual Fund drive to the very best of their ability.  The point is to give, please. 100% support on the part of each current family is essential.  Your contribution to the Annual Fund benefits our children as the Annual Fund is an integral part of the school’s operating budget.

Your gifts, of every size, are appreciated enormously.  We’ll add new donors to the list in each edition of TM@S.  If you have any questions, please contact me.
