Liz Alexander Exhibit Opening at Montserrat Gallery

 This November, Liz Alexander will be featured in a three-artist exhibition at Montserrat Gallery entitledHome Sweet Home. In January, after winter break, she will give the Middle School students and teachers a private tour. The exhibit is open to the public and everyone is welcome to attend.  (Look for postcards in the lobby.) We hope to see you there!

Maskmaking and Mold-making

Each week, I introduce students to new techniques. This week, we are learning a new technique: plaster mold-making. Using plaster strips students are able to take molds of their own faces and use them to either create lifelike replicas or to mold a custom mask that will fit only their proportions. 

The process is very simple. First, you create a water-resistant coating by applying Vaseline to the skin, then a series of small plaster strips (gauze coated with plaster) is dipped in water and applied to the face. After about 10 minutes, the mask is finally hard enough and eyebrows are wiggled so the plaster can be removed, holding its shape.

The process is exciting to the students, and the result always of great interest!

Hello Stoneridge! I would like to introduce myself as Liz, your new art teacher.  I am so excited to meet you all and see all of the wonderful things we will make together.  I have arrived at Stoneridge by way of the Shady Hill School in Cambridge, MA where I taught woodworking, silversmithing, and sculpture during the extended day and summer. I am also continuing my work with Montserrat School of Art's sculpture faculty where I teach sculpture techniques and installation art.

Though I will miss all of the friends I made and students I taught, the joy and excitement I feel about being at Stoneridge and making new friends overshadows any feelings I have about leaving Shady Hill. I'm looking forward to a year filled with art and adventure. See you in the Art Room.
